Patriotic Pins

There are many different ways to symbolize one's patriotism. Some display large flags in their front lawns. Some attach magnetic yellow ribbons to the sides or bumpers of their cars. Others wear insignia such as yellow ribbons, flags or other patriotic pins to show support for their country. Patriotic pins can be anything from pictures of the US flag, yellow ribbons or words like Support Our Troops or Remembrance.

Symbolic support of one's country has been around for quite some time. In 1917 a man named George A. Norton wrote a song Round Her Neck She Wears a Yeller Ribbon. This song was re-written in 1949 by Russ Morgan. He titled the new version She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and this is the version most people are familiar with today.

The song was adapted and the yellow ribbon first became symbolic in 1979 for the support of the hostages at the US Embassy in Tehran. It was used again as a patriotic symbol in the 1990s during the Gulf War. The yellow ribbon resurfaced again in 2003 for the Invasion of Iraq. These yellow ribbons were everywhere for a while. They were stuck to cars, pinned on lapels, and they permeated every aspect of our daily lives.

It was only days after September 11th before patriotic pins surfaced. They were called 9-11 or loyalty ribbons and were either purple, red, white or blue. Patriotic pins began to be produced with many different 9-11 icons. There were patriotic pins of the twin towers, the Pentagon, or the number 93 for those who died on Flight 93 which crashed in Pennsylvania.

As the nature of the beast, with these patriotic pins came controversy. Somewhere along the line the yellow ribbon was politicized and seen as supporting George Bush rather than the troops sent to war. Many asked the question, What were these icons really supporting? It was reported that certain networks forbade their journalists to wear yellow ribbon pins or any patriotic pins. Some school teachers sent kids home for wearing patriotic pins saying God Bless America. The country was up in arms about the separation between church and state and the appropriateness of wearing patriotic paraphernalia. In the end, journalists and students alike were allowed to wear their symbols of support.

In the UK, people still pin on red poppies as a symbol for the fallen veterans. Though the fifth anniversary of September 11th was just last month, people still have yellow ribbon pins and support the troops magnets on their cars. One can say as long as there is patriotism, there will be patriotic pins and other symbols to represent one's pride in their country and those who fight for it.
