A Disney tradition exists few may be aware of. It is the secret world of Disney pin collecting and trading and it's coming to a town near you.

Disney has always offered collectible pins at their parks and resorts. These pins feature characters and events from Disney movies. There are thousands of pins and are usually around fifteen dollars a piece. The characters range from Cinderella to Jessica Rabbit. People from all over the world collect these Disney pins as a hobby, trying to acquire the limited edition pins and those that are rare to find.

This month marks the seven year anniversary of the bread and butter of Disney pins, pin trading. The Walt Disney Company introduced Disney pin trading at the beginning of the Millennium Celebration in October of 1999. It was here this craze really took off. It gave the pin collectors an official chance to trade pins with other collectors and Disney crew members.

Pin trading takes place in the Disney theme parks and resorts. If a collector sees a Disney crew member with a green lanyard on, the crew member must trade one of their pins with the collectors pin. It is the collector's choice of which pin to snatch from the lanyard, but after the trade is made, the deal is finished and the collector must find a new crew member in which to conduct business with. There are even special Disney crew members walking around wearing teal lanyards. These pins are for children only, no adults allowed.

Pin trading is taken rather seriously among these consignees. There is a website dedicated to the art of pin trading, appropriately titled disneypins.com. This official website was developed in April 2002 to meet the growing demand of pin traders and their yearning for a medium through which to purchase their pins. This website contains a question and answer format for the Disney pin collector's inquiring mind. The website explains the difference between a flocked pin and epoxy coating. It outlines the origins of pin collecting and trading and promotes special pin trading events. The most interesting aspect of this site is the Disney pin trading etiquette handbook. The handbook outlines the tactful and proper way to trade pins.

For these Disney pin collectors, this is a hobby that can essentially last forever. A person can buy and trade pins indefinitely. With Disney producing more pins everyday, these collectors are sure to bide their time in anticipation for the newest and latest pin design. After all of this waiting with breath bated, there's only one thing to do: turn around and trade it for a new one.
